Many of our Anglers will be aware of the danger of the Fresh Water Fish Parasite – ARGULUS presents to our Scottish Fisheries. There is however a relatively new kid on the block – GYRODACTYLIS – this appears to be finding its way over from America via Scandinavia and is a real baddie. It is reckoned to be carried on anglers Felt Soles; nets etc. In an attempt to safeguard ourselves from this danger, we respectfully inform our anglers, that as from Monday 21st May all boats will be supplied with a Landing Net. Boat Anglers will not be allowed to use his /her own net. We will also be looking at supplying Fish Bags. Until we get this implemented, we ask you to make sure that your bags (and any other gear) are well cleaned (and dipped in solution provided) before bringing them on to the water. Bank Anglers MUST dip their nets etc at the Lodge, when he/she collects a permit from the lodge and MUST NOT go on to the loch before this has been done – remember to advise your catch to the boatman. [most people have a mobile and you can phone across to the lodge]

Catches over the past week have been a bit poorer than normal. This is down to the variable winds and temperatures. The fish just do not know if they are coming or going. On the bright side, this means that fish stocks are high and when the weather does settle we will be in for some really good sport. Friday and Saturday were not too bad.

SSEB AC had 29fish for 91lbs; Mr Middleton and his partner from Falkirk had Seven beautiful fish for 24lbs – best fish 5 ½ lbs. Waders AC with two boats managed 8 for 24lbs. Mr Smith from Grangemouth had three wonderful fish for 16lbs – best fish a cracking 7lbs and Townhill AC from Dunfermline had 23 fish for 78lbs – best fish 5 ½ lbs.

As I write the conditions are a bit better. The wind has dropped and there is good cloud cover. This follows yet another cold blustery weekend. Let us hope the improvement continues.

Buzzers are still best, with most of the guys favouring the washing line method, with a f.a.b on the point. Daiwl bachs are also picking up fish as are dancers and damsels. Midlothian AC had four boats on Friday evening and netted 19 fish for 54lbs.

On Saturday Falkirk Fly Dressers had a reasonable good day with 22 fish for 52lbs and Butcher Boy AC managed 34 fish for 92lbs. It was a similar story on Sunday with Farmers Association AC netting 34 fish for 81lbs, and Rainbow AS with 7 boats, managed 19 for 47lbs. These are not brilliant bags but very good for the conditions.

The Browns seem to be sulking a bit at the moment, but some very good “silvers” in the 3½ to 4½ class, are showing up.

Normally the loch fishes well in an East wind, but as soon as it joins with a northerly, things go a wee bit dour. We had a bitter North Easter from Monday to Friday and it made things difficult for the anglers. Despite this, on Monday with three boats, Longannet AC managed 11 fish for 26lbs; on Tuesday Scotsman Pensioners, also with three boats, had 12 fish for 35lbs. Good catches in very difficult conditions.

Conditions improved on Friday and some very good bags were caught with St Mungos AC from Perth boating 37 fish for 98lbs; Lochinch AC, with 3 boats, had a very creditable 23 fish for 64lbs.

On Saturday and Sunday the cold blustery conditions returned, and of course it showed up in the catches. IBM had 30 fish for 87lbs; Aberdour AC managed 25 fish for 62lbs. Best fish was a Five Pound Rainbow. These are very good bags for the conditions.

Fish are still doing best on Black, Brown or Olive Buzzers.

As of Monday 30th April, FULL DAY and EVENING SESSIONS ARE AVAILABLE.

The fish are still keen to rise to buzzers with Black being a favourite. Best lures are mini dancers and orange blobs. The fish are still high in the water, so floating lines or midge tips are best for the job.

On Friday, Water Aid FF with three boats managed 17 fish for 55lbs with 2 returned; Gavin Duncan had 6 fish for 17lbs, and W Sterrick and his partner had 12 for 38lbs. Most of the fish were taken on a short size 12 dancer.

On Saturday, Hedgehogs AC from Winchburgh, had 29 fish for 79lbs, this with four boats while Penicuik AC with eight boats had 54 fish for 160lbs and Leslie and Glenrothes AC with Six boats had 42 fish for 14lbs. There are still a healthy number of overwintered rainbows and silvers in the 5 – 6lb class being caught.

Long may that continue?

THE COMMITTEE would respectfully remind anglers that at either end of the loch there are tall reeds. These are important nesting sites and are protected by floating ropes closing off boat access.

We have had reports of anglers actually casting over the ropes into the protected water.

We would like to warn anglers that anyone found doing this, faces an immediate ban from the water. The birds must be protected.

Thank you for your co operation
